Halo Collimators reduce beam loss at SLAC LCLS-II
In January of 2017 Nor-Cal Products was awarded a DOE contract to manufacture and deliver 22 Halo Collimators to the SLAC National Accelerator Center
, for installation at LCLS-II. Since that time, Nor-Cal Products has successfully delivered a total of 25 Halo Collimators.
Adjustable-gap collimators are used to eliminate undesirable electrons in order to avoid excessive radiation due to beam loss in sensitive areas and to reduce activation of accelerator components. The halo collimator system consists of multiple sets of adjustable rectangular jaws strategically placed to make cuts in the six dimensional beam phase space while allowing the desired, much smaller beam to pass unaffected. The various wakefields of the collimators, including possible misalignments, are also assessed here to ensure there is no significant degradation of the beam brightness.
